Hindus around the country are marking Ganesh Utsav, the festival of Lord Ganesh.

Shree Shirdi Sai Mandir in Toorak, Shastri Vijay Kumar said Ganesh Utsav is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Ganesha for 10 days.

“He is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati and he is honored as he is the god of intellect and wisdom,” Mr Kumar said.

He said it is believed Lord Ganesh bestowed his presence on the earth for all his devotees during the festival.

“The son of goddess Parvati, Ganesh is identified by his elephant head, which he acquired after having his own human head severed by Shiva.”

“After killing his wife’s young son in an act of jealousy, Shiva brings Ganesh back to life as a god and bestows upon him a new head that of an elephant.”

Mr Kumar said Lord Ganesh was one of the best-known and most widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon.

Following the 10 days of prayers, he said devotees would walk to the sea tomorrow with statues of Lord Ganesh and immerse it in the sea.
