Hughes – Rewa’s Hero

Setareki Hughes will forever be credited as the man who scored the goal that won Rewa the 2014 Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants tournament.

The Navunievu, Bua, man was calmly confident about the task he had in those closing minutes to make the magic happen.

“When I saw the ball coming, I was fully confident that I was going to put the ball inside the net,” he said.

Hughes acknowledged his parents, Vunisau Hughes and Mere Tanoa, as well as his family for their support and dedicated the win to his niece Mavi and God for his blessings.

“I want to thank my parents and family for their support throughout the tournament and especially to my niece Mavi and to the Lord for his strength to be able to deliver on the field.”

Hughes started as an Under-12 representative for Labasa in 2006 and has since come a long way, featuring in the national Under-20 side that qualified for the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which he hopes to feature in.

“The main focus now will be on making it through the trials for the national Under-20 side for the FIFA World Cup next year in New Zealand as well as the national league and IDC.”

Hughes was presented the Golden Ball award during yesterday’s closing at the ANZ Stadium while the Delta Tigers received a $11,000 prizemoney in addition to the B.O.G. Trophy.

Rewa last won the title in 2011 and this year marks the sixth time the Delta Tigers have claimed the prestigious title.
