There would be a total of 66,048 pre-poll voters who would be casting their votes starting from September 3, when the pre-poll venues would open for pre-polling.

The Fijians Elections Office, in a press conference confirmed the figures for pre-poll voters and urged all Fijians to inform people about the pre-poll if they knew any who applied for pre-polling.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem together with other officials yesterday showcased how the ballot boxes would be sealed after the ballot votes are placed in it. There would be seals which have numbers and the numbers would be cross checked from a book of sealing numbers, once the votes are placed in boxes  they would be sealed under police guard.

“We have already started receiving the ballot papers in envelopes through postal vote applicants and would seal the box,” Mr Saneem said.

The office placed a local postal ballot vote which came in DHL envelop in the ballot box and sealed it in front of the media. The envelopes would only be opened on September 17.

This is the procedure to be followed by presiding officers, where an empty ballot box would be shown by the officer, in the presence of four witnesses, if there is no polling agents present, a voter would be called to witness as the seals would be in place and the witnesses would sign against the seal numbers on the book.

“The ballot boxes would be under police guard at all times and every afternoon the ballot boxes would be sealed to be opened the next morning.”

Meanwhile for pre-polling which begins on Wednesday, 80 people would be on the ground to undertake the task throughout the country.

There would be 547 pre-poll stations and the total number of voters is 66,048 voters for pre-poll and the reminder which is about 525,038 voters would do polling on the day or they are postal voters.

“We have attempted all means possible to inform pre-poll voters about the pre-polling and we seek the help of all Fijians who are part of the 2014 elections to assist other voters as well in passing on the message and for all those who would be going out to work on the day,” Mr Saneem said.
