National Federation Party president Tupou Draunidalo said she had happily called herself a Fiji Islander before the common identity ‘Fijian’ was introduced.

Speaking on FBC TV’s 4 the Record on Sunday she said the introduction of common identity was very messy.

Roko-Tupou-Draunidalo-PresiMs Draunidalo, when questioned whether she supported the common identity, said there was a common identity which was ‘Fiji Islander.’

“We had a common identity; we were all Fiji Islanders, and I was very happy to be called a Fiji Islander,” she said.

“I happily called myself a Fiji Islander when I went overseas and when I came back and filled the form; I wrote down Fiji Islander; when people asked me, I said am a Fiji Islander, what is wrong with that.”

Ms Draunidalo said if the common name ‘Fijian’ was to be used, then the group that owned the name should have been consulted first.

“I would consult those who had the name Fijian to start with, just go and ask them nicely, if you ask them nicely they would say yes but please ask them first.”

Meanwhile the Fiji Labour Party candidate Dr Rohit Kishore told the programme he didn’t have any problem being called Fijian.

He however said the sad thing was that as soon as name was introduced, the Native Land Trust Board had been changed to iTaukei Land Trust Board.

“Whenever we go out of the country, we travel on a passport and its a blue passport, the Fijian passport – no problem but coming down to a micro level, we are in a circles; whether we like it or not I am an Indian; she is a Fijian and you can’t change that; people live in their own circles and I don’t think we can take that away; no piece of paper can take that away.”
