Teams from the Fijian Elections Office left the Marine Jetty bound for the Lau Group yesterday.

These teams have been deployed to these islands because of the remoteness of most of the communities there.

Around 155 people employed as pre poll presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling day workers boarded the five charted vessels.

In addressing the staff, Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem reminded them of their duty to ensure that every registered voter was met the same high standard of professionalism, no matter where or when they voted.

“You represent the Fijian Elections Office and your behaviour will determine the confidence that the people of the Eastern Division have that their vote will be counted and their voice heard,” Mr Saneem said.

“It will also determine the political parties confidence in the process, which is very important.

“It is essential, therefore that you adhere to the highest standards of impartiality and professional conduct at all times. Nothing less will be tolerated by me or by the public whom we serve. So as long as you demonstrate honesty, integrity and transparency in all your transactions, you will always have my support and that of my deputy.”

Mr Saneem told the teams that he expected each staff to remain calm, approachable, friendly and patient under any circumstance.

“Remember to always treat others the way you would expect to be treated yourselves,” he said.
