Ebola Threat ‘Low In Fiji’

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the risk of Ebola disease in Fiji is currently very low.

The ministry’s media liaison officer, Sunil Chandra said Ebola was a killer virus and it is spread through close contact with people suffering from the disease.

“Ebola virus is not an airborne disease and it is not spread by mosquitoes,” Mr Chandra said.

He said a travel advisory had been given to the public to caution Fijians against travelling to West Africa becuase of the outbreak.

“We have advised all Fijian citizens against non-essential travel to Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria until further notice.”

Mr Chandra said people coming into the country from Ebola affected countries or were sick were being screened.

“We are urging people to declare to the authorities at the ports of entry if they are sick so that they can be checked,” he said.
