The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption and Police have denied claims they have pending charges against former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.

Social Democratic Liberal Party

leader Ro Teimumu Kepa had claimed that former Mr Qarase risks being arrested upon his return from the United States. However, Police and FICAC have both denied that they have any case against Mr Qarase registered with them.

In a press statement yesterday, Ro Teimumu said they had “credible reports” that Mr Qarase risked being arrested.

In the same release, Ro Teimumu claimed that FICAC had questioned people about Mr Qarase’s activities.

FICAC and the Fiji Police Force have both come out and denied this.

FICAC said: “FICAC denies this statement based on misconceived information.”

The Fiji Police Force has also denied the unsubstantiated claims by Ro Teimumu.

Commissioner of Police Major General Bernardus Groenewald said: “The Fiji Police are not aware of any criminal case that has been registered against Mr Laisenia Qarase.”

With no case being registered, it rules out the possibility of Mr Qarase being arrested.

Ro Teimumu said Mr Qarase was advised to remain in the US by SODELPA and his family members.
