The 45 Fijian peacekeepers are still being detained by their captors.

This was confirmed yesterday by the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Brigadier- General Mosese Tikoitoga.

He said the negotiation team was still negotiating their release.

Meanwhile the United Nations (UN) Security Council yesterday again called for the immediate and unconditional release of 45 Fijian peacekeepers seized late last week.

In an interview with a Noida-based newspaper, UN Disengagement Observer Force Commander, Lt Gen Iqbal Singh Singha, said the Filipinos’ resistance further compromised the situation of the Fijian peacekeepers earlier abducted by the Syrian rebels affiliated with al-Qaeda.

He also criticised the defiance of the 40 trapped Filipino peacekeepers as “non-professional.”

“The non-professional actions of the Filipino troops have endangered the lives of the Fijian soldiers,” Lt Gen Singha told the India Times in a report published on Thursday (Manila time).

“They have defied orders at a time when we had negotiated a ceasefire with the rebels to ensure that all troops in the conflict area could exit,” he added.

The RFMF Commander has again urged members of the public to pray for the 45 peacekeepers.
