The Fiji Touch Association have started financial preparations for the 2015 Federation of International Touch (FIT) Touch Rugby World Cup held at Coffs Harbour, Australia.

The association held a cocktail fundraiser on Wednesday night to fundraise for the trip to the World Cup.

Team Fiji tour co-ordinator Tomasi Tiko said they still have a long way to go.

“We invited a few guests as well and some corporate organisations to come and pledge towards our goal of going to the World Cup,” he said.

“We’re hoping for a bit more turnout but on the flip side we still made a profit of $3000 and we still have a long way to go.

“We are trying to send six teams to the world cup. We know it’s next year so that’s why we are raising as much money as we can to send our teams across.”

The six teams will include men, Mixed women’s, Open category, men’s 30s, 35s and 40s and the cost per team will come to a total of $60,000 which will include airfares, accomadation, transportation and visa fees.

“Invitations are always open to corporate companies and also anyone who is interested in coming on board and assisting the team to the World Cup as well,” Tiko said.

Though financial preparations have just started, Tiko said training and trials have taken place already with final trials commencing early next year.

“We still have a long way to go so what has taken place is that all the teams have had trials and training squads have been selected between 20 to 28 players, so they have started training now and also started fundraising as well,” he said.

“So come January or February, fitness tests and final trials will start in order to select the final squad to represent Fiji.”

Fiji attended their first Touch Rugby World Cup in 1999 in Sydney, Australia where they finished eighth.

Their second World Cup in Stellenbosch, South Africa 2007 where they finished fourth and their last World Cup in 2011 in Edinburgh, Scotland where they finished fourth again.

Tiko said their objective next year is to do better than fourth and win the tournament.

“Our aim this time is to do much better, we are going with the aim of winning but obviously that’s a challenge as well which is why we are starting early now with raising funds and training which will put us in the best possible position where we can achieve the best outcome.” he said.

The 2015 FIT Touch Rugby World Cup will be held on April 29 to May 3 at Coffs Harbour, Australia.
