The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga has condemned Sitiveni Rabuka’s comments in an interview with Radio New Zealand.

During the interview Mr Rabuka had said Fiji’s Muslim community could face a serious backlash if the peacekeepers were harmed by their captors, the al-Qaeda affiliated group, al-Nusra.

Brigadier-General Tikoitoga said this was a most unfortunate comment by anybody.

“It is very irresponsible and it closely borders on inciting violence in Fiji,” the Commander said.

“We all should condemn this comment and hold Sitiveni accountable.”

He said the comment was very irresponsible, especially coming from a person who had been the Commander of the RFMF and a person who was PM for Fiji and one who had links to the multi-racial society. Mr Rabuka making those comments only showed the sick attitude he had, he said.

The Commander said at this time the whole nation should stand together and be united for those in the Golan Heights and not be giving out such statements.

“We condemn it and Police should look into it further if they want to but the audio was sent to me yesterday.”

The Fiji Police Force has said they would not be making any comments at this point in time.

Chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusiate Tudravu yesterday said they would only comment after an official complaint was lodged.

When approached by Fiji Sun for a comment on the issue, Mr Rabuka said, “I am forwarding the link where you can listen to the interview. In the beginning I had choked on my emotions as I thought of Siwa (my nephew) and Panapasa (my cousin’s granddaughter’s husband of a few months who left straight after the wedding we had in Tailevu),” he said.

“You can make up your own mind on what the RFMF had to say.”
