The Republic of Fiji Military Forces Wives and Mothers Club annual volleyball and netball tournament ended in Suva yesterday.

The Delta Coy Nadi Army Wives secretary Rosa Baniwai said their squad always looked forward to the tournament because it gave them a chance to meet old friends. “The tournament brings togetherness as you get to know your other sisters under one umbrella,” she said. “The saying ‘sports brings people together’ is really true because I met some of my classmates who I have not seen since school and it’s like a reunion for us to see them again.”

Rosa is the wife of Sgt. Tuta Baniwai, who returned from peacekeeping duties in the Golan Heights, Syria, two weeks ago. She said the competition brought the wives together to support each other, which in turn help them support their husbands.

Compared to last year, this year’s competitions have been challenging and the Delta Coy team managed to reach the quarterfinals this year.

“This competition has been a challenging one for our ladies, especially for the outer units from Nadi, Lautoka and Labasa but regardless we love travelling down to Suva,” Baniwai said.

“We reached the quarterfinals in Grade A but we can’t beat Suva because they have club games while a lot of us are working mums.”

Delta Coy lost to Navy 38-8 in the quarterfinals.
