Sonke and Kristina Schafer made their debut at the 31st annual Musket Cove Regatta 2014 at Malolo Lailai Islands yesterday.

The couple’s SV Zephyrus from Frankfurt, Germany, are among the 72 yachts taking part in the week-long event.

Sonke said they marvelled at the event, hoping to gather maximum fun under the Fijian sun.

“This is the first time we are competing in this competition and it’s great idea to get us yachties and to have fun together,” Sonke said.

“We have been sailing for the past seven years following our parents. We arrived in June and roamed the Fijian waters.

“It is lovely to have a look around enjoying the Fiji sun.”

Musket Cove Regatta director Will Moffat says they are looking forward to a good week.

“The regatta has been going for the long time and lot of people has been here longer then me as I have been here for the last 15 years,” Moffat said.

Over the years participants hailed from international ports from as far as the UK, US, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji.

“Traditionally we have seen always the Kiwis and the Aussies in the Pacific circuit and it is great to see the Americans coming up that show that Fiji is really among that important destination for the cruise stop and holds us in high regard,” Moffat said.

Other competition includes the golf tournament, Vonu Paddle race from Namotu Islands resort, Port Opua Hobie Cat challenge, and the much anticipated Fiji Water Round Malolo Classic (near Sandbank).

The sponsors include Paradise Beverages, Fiji Water, Tourism Fiji, Punjas, Pacific Energy, Victoria Wines, Vodafone, Port Opua, Bridge Marina Travelift, Tauranga Marine Industry Association, Tauranga Bridge Marina, CJ Patel Group, Tappoos, and Resorts including Lomani Island, Plantation Island, and Beachcomber.

“We thank the sponsors and the volunteers for coming on board and being part of this competition,” Moffat said. The annual event ends on September 10.
