3 New Centres For West

Three women’s resource centres are expected to open soon in the Western Division.

Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni says the centres have been built with the funding from her ministry.

“Each centre will operate with the ‘One Centre, One Core Product’ concept so that women can focus on producing quality products and ensuring consistency of quantity, especially when it will be export-driven,” Dr Luveni said.

Semo and Vatukarasa women’s centres in Sigatoka cost more than $30,000 to build and the Volivoli Women’s Centre, which is under construction, was allocated $6000, she said.

Semo Village headman Rusiate Natoga said their centre would boost income-generation through selling of pottery to resorts.

“The village has a population of 300 and the Semo Women’s Group is engaged in making pottery, handicraft and selling vegetables by the roadside.

“This will be a great attraction to tourists and travellers, given that the centre is located beside the Queens Highway and will enable us to use untapped resources and become self-sufficient,” Mr Natoga said.

The ministry has built 45 women’s centres around Fiji and has already opened more than 16.
