The Chinese community in Fiji yesterday celebrated China National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The celebrations were held at the Yat Sen Secondary School Hall at Flagstaff in Suva.

Police chief Commissioner Benardus Groenewald, who was one of the chief guests at the celebration with his wife, said the celebration was of Chinese identity and a time of reflection for the community on their origins and development.

“From the humble beginnings through your communities over the past generations, you have managed to impact the world with your innovation and your influence in various sectors of society,” Mr Groenewald said.

He said his attendance demonstrated their support and intention to connect with the Chinese community in Fiji.

“The prevention of crime is not a policing issue alone. This initiative requires an all community and whole government approach. It should be the responsibility of all concerned citizens as we desire a safe society for our people.

“We all have a civic obligation in upholding the rule of law to ensure a safe environment for the vulnerable in our community and a safe society for our women and children.”

President of the Chinese Association of Fiji Jenny Seeto said the association was committed to promoting and fostering the social, cultural, economic and general welfare of the Chinese community in Fiji.

“We co-operate and interact with other communities and organisations to encourage and foster harmony among communities.”

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as the Moon Festival. The actual day is today which is the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar.

The festival also signifies family unity and is a time for friends to get together.
