Defending champions of the various categories failed to retain their titles during the ANZ Nadi International Airport Volleyball tournament last Saturday.

This was after Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) were crowned winners of the men’s category defeating Lyndhurst and Pacific Floating Device (PFD) won the women’s category defeating Fiji Revenue & Custom Authority (FRCA) at Prince Charles Park in Nadi last Saturday.

Tournament chairman Joe Gray said stiff competition was provided by opponents during the tourney.

“The level of competition has gone up a notch and it has been tough for champions to defend their titles,’’ he said.

He said it was pleasing to witness the level of skills from the Suva teams.

“Nadi should look at having businesshouse competition volleyball to help develop their players.”

However, Gray says organising such an event was not easy.

“We have had some technical challenges and it is something where we have to improve next year,” Gray said. Meanwhile, FRCA were crowned winners of the Masters women’s category while WAF West took out the Masters men’s category and PFD won the Mixed category.

This was ANZ’s last year of the five-year sponsorship contract but the committee has had a good response from corporate organisations for naming rights.

Eighty two (82) organisations with 184 teams competed at the tournament including the Air New Zealand Auckland team.
