Thousands of Hindu devotees took to the streets of Suva yesterday to celebrate Ganesh Utsav, signifying the birth of Lord Ganesha.

Sevashram Sangha Fiji secretary Akhilesh Prasad says devotees from as far as Sawani and Tailevu were gathered at the Sevashram Sangha in Bau Street, Suva, for the procession float.

“Ganesh is the Hindu God of Wisdom and he removes all obstacles from our path. We celebrate and conduct our prayers for 10 days before a procession begins on the 11th day,” Mr Prasad said.

“This morning (yesterday) we will immerse Lord Ganesh’s statue in the sea.”

This event is celebrated in Fiji every year and is marked by various business organisations in town.
