Navesi Settlement Is ‘Violence Free’

The Navesi Settlement at Nadonumai, Lami, has been declared a violence free community. This is the 90th community in Fiji to join the Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community Campaign (ZTVFC) and undergo 10 preparatory phases to champion the protection of women and children.

Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni says their  11-month awareness programme was aimed at reducing gender discrimination and violence at Nadonumai.

“The Ministry and Fiji Police Force, in partnership with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), facilitate awareness programmes which focus on positive parenting, child protection, anger and stress management, the Domestic Violence Decree, Child Welfare Decree, gender-based violence and women’s reproductive health,” Dr Luveni said.

“It provides women’s groups with some form of income generating programmes so that they can also alleviate poverty.”

Delainavesi Community Post officer Ulamila Sereivalu said positive changes had been noticed at Nadonumai because of crime prevention and awareness campaigns.

“This unites the community and Nadonumai has been known for its notorious activities. Now, the youths have realised their role and have maintained the law and order in the community. We hope to spread this campaign out to the other 10 settlements in Delainavesi,” Mrs Sereivalu said.
