Media personnel learned more things about the Fiji Red Cross Society during a media workshop in Suva yesterday.

The society’s director general, Filipe Nainoca, said the workshop was aimed at providing members of the media a better understanding of the society’s roles and responsibilities.

“A lot of people, including those from the media, don’t really know what the Red Cross is. An example is that we are mostly understood as a non-government organisation when we are actually a humanitarian organistaion,” Mr Nainoca said.

He said given the power the media has in reaching targeted audiences they thought it would be a great idea to create a platform to meet and talk with media people.

“One of the things that we’ve also found out was that we’ve really not been connecting well with the media. We also feel that they don’t have an indepth understanding of what we do, how and why we do things. This workshop helps facilitate that,” Mr Nainoca said.
