Bad weather deterred the Fijian Elections office team from reaching Vanuabalavu yesterday for pre-polling.

Pre-polling in three villages in Vanuabalavu: Lomaloma, Uruone and Levukana will now be done today.

The Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, said the boat taking the pre-polling items could not reach the island because of bad weather. As a result, the Fijian Elections Office team did not want to take any risk.

“We were supposed to have 7559 persons voting in 65 polling stations but we were having problems because of the  weather and the boat was unable to reach Vanuabalavu,” he said.

“Now these villages would be polling tomorrow (Wednesday) and they would start at the usual times and we had been pumping out this message through radio and we have also liaised with villages to inform them that we were unable to reach them,” Mr Saneem said.

Today there will be 50 polling stations including the three in Vanuabalavu. The Fijian Elections Office anticipates approximately 4800 plus voters.

Meanwhile, for the first week, the Fijian Elections Office has recorded 75 to 81 percent of pre-poll from the Western, Central and Northern divisions.

However, the office was unable to provide any statistics from the Eastern Division.

“These places are with low coverage so we are still not able to transmit the data,” Mr Saneem said.
