“It’s good to have Sete back in the country and in the team. He’s a good man and an exceptional player and it’s great to have him back in the Fiji colours,” Ryan said.

Ryan confirmed no new players had signed contracts yet and that players had been progressing well through the weeks.

“Currently no new players have signed contracts. As for our training, we’ve had several weeks of fitness training and it’s been quite tough on the players as they’ve found it quite challenging to adapt.

“But as the weeks progress and the training continues they’ll get the benefits of the training programme and see how useful this all will be to them when the tournament kicks off. So their progress is on track.”

Cakau is expected to bring a wealth of experience as a former skipper and playing for Navy Sports Club in Sri Lanka as well as being the most senior player in the squad aside from Naitasiri speedster Nasoni Roko.

Meanwhile, Ryan is expected to name his final 24-member squad today.
