2 Heroes Revealed

Two heroes emerged from the talks that led to the release of 45 Golan Heights Fijian peacekeepers yesterday.

Captain Savenaca Siwatibau Rabuka, commanding officer of the 45, and Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation played influential roles.

Captain Rabuka’s examplary leadership and calming influence shone through. Ratu Inoke  secretly left the election campaign.

He flew to Qatar, a Middle East ally of Fiji, to get its help. Qatar then went in and used its influence to assist and secure the soldiers’ release.

The soldiers were held captive for two weeks by the Syrian rebel group, al-Nusra Front. In the photo: UNDOF Commander Lieutenant General Iqbal Singha welcomes back the 45 peacekeepers.
