Participating in the Telecom Fiji Limited Sugar Festival this year as a queen contestant is an opportunity for Shayal Sanjilyn Lata, 19, to promote the fight against child abuse.

Miss Lata is from Nadi. She is the eldest of six siblings. She is sponsored by Alvins Electric.

“My message to the people of Lautoka is to stop child abuse,” she said.

“We should let children be free in their thoughts and do not dictate the way their lives should be. Give them a chance at whatever they wish to do and support them regardless,” she said.

She is doing foundation studies in chemical science at the University of the South Pacific in Lautoka.

“I want to become a pharmacist. My mum is the resemblance of a strong woman. I am proud to have her as my mother.”

She urges the people to support the festival and help raise money for the needy.
