The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) has denied claims made on social media that its staff had released information about ballot boxes.

“It has been brought to FICAC’s attention that certain persons/groups publish false reports on social media that FICAC staff has reported that pre-ticked ballot papers were packed in containers.

FICAC deny such claims being reported by its staff or any other person.

“This information was false and FICAC warns the public to be vigilant in sharing information in public.”

Fiji Labour Party member Ben Padarath had shared a status on his Facebook page claiming that FICAC staff reported that pre-ticked ballot papers were packed into “containers to replace ballot papers in selected places.”

This misinformation was widely disseminated on various Facebook pages and profiles.

This latest update from FICAC adds to the already growing number of cases whereby supporters of and members of political parties deliberately or in their ignorance spread misinformation. Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem has also rubbished such claims.

He said: “I can assure you that no pre-marked ballot paper is being sent around as there had been close to 6000 papers distributed around Fiji already and we haven’t heard any person come back to us. Therefore the veracity of those claims needs to be actually checked because they are allegations.

“They haven’t raised it with us, and I invite the party to raise it with us with evidence that they have and we surely will deal with it as they come but we don’t work on allegations we go with facts and figures and the parties are invited to come to us.”
