The whole country is proud of the achievement of the Telecom Fijiana 7s rugby team which won the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong.

The Fijian women have also qualified to take part in the 2014-2015 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.

This is a significant achievement and they have shown that they need to be taken seriously.

For a number of years Fijiana have been trying to make the cut for the series.

Last year they won the bronze medal at the Rugby World Cup Women’s 7s championship in Moscow.

That performance set them up for this year. Timoci Wainiqolo was the coach then.  Iliesa Tanivula took over from him and has taken the Fijianas to a new level.

The spirit to fight back when defeat was staring them in the face is the mark of a great team.

In the cup semifinal and final in Hong Kong  the Fijianas  were trailing.

Against China in the semifinal, they were trailing and they fought to clinch the match 21-19.

Against France in the final, they repeated the performance and came out victorious 24-19.

The style in which they clawed their way back to win can be compared to great teams like the All Blacks and the Canterbury Crusaders.

The never-give-up-hope attitude is the hallmark of all great teams.

They played to the final whistle. It demonstrates a mental toughness that is the critical factor in the dying stages of  any match.

The Fijiana showed they had it in the semifinal and final and it augers well  for the future. When they face tougher teams like England and New Zealand, they will not only need it but they will need lots of it.

In the  world 7s series, they will face different conditions depending on where they play. These coupled with the travel will put  mental and physical pressures on them.

The Fijiana deserve more recognition for their achievements so far.

They have put Fiji on the map and they are the only team from the Oceania region in the world series.

Because of their rapidly growing profile, they need consideration in extra funding maybe through player contracts just like the men.
