The Fiji Rugby Union has applauded the achievement of the Telecom Fijana 7s team over the weekend in Hong Kong.

FRU’s chief executive officer Radrodro Tabualevu made the comment after the Iliesa Tanivula-coached side won the 2014-2015 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series qualifier in Hong Kong last Saturday.

This enables them to take part in the 2014/2015 IRB Women Sevens Series which starts in Dubai on December 4-5.

Tabualevu said the FRU often received little credit for their role.

“The FRU board and management have been under fire lately and it can at times seem like its’ a thankless job,”he said.

“The women, their coach and manageress have toiled on quietly to achieve this qualification and the girls have worked hard to be fine ambassadors of FRU and Fiji. They will now take our story to Brazil, USA, Canada, England and the Netherlands to compete in the IRB 7s

“There is much to learn from them. Their selfless desire to represent the country is refreshing and uplifting. A big vinaka vakalevu to the girls on behalf of their consortium partner sponsor Telecom Fiji Limited and the FRU.”

Meanwhile, Telecom Fijiana 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula aims to grow a bigger and stronger pool of players for the 2014-2015 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.

He said the bigger picture is to qualify automatically for the 2016 Rio Olympics Games.

“But there is a lot of work that needs to be done,”  Tanivula said.

“This will change women’s rugby in Fiji; people will have a lot of interest in it which is good.”

Tanivula admitted that there are real challenges out there but he is optimistic despite the transition to women’s coach from men’s.He said there was a vast difference coaching the women side from being a men team’s coach.

“I guess in some ways but there is not a lot of difference for the girls just getting their core skills right. The understanding is there and  we just need to channel the right information in getting the basics right at this stage before going further,” he said.

The core team for the 2014/2015 IRB World Sevens Series including Fiji, China, France and South Africa  are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Russia, Spain and United States

The Fijiana side arrives at the Nadi International Airport at 7.30am today.
