Tokatoka Westfield Dragons rugby club have pulled out of the Pacific Energy Ovalau 7s in Nasau Park in Levuka this weekend.

Head Coach Epeli Lagiloa confirmed this during their recruitment drive at the AFL grounds in Namaka on Monday.

The trials attracted more than 50 enthusiastic players from western rugby clubs, mainly in the Nadi-Lautoka corridor, who have hopes to secure a professional contract.

“We are very happy that more than 50 players turned up in numbers. We expected more, but some called stating their non-presence,” said Lagiloa.

“We are expecting about 200 to be present in this Saturday’s trials in Suva and in two weeks we should name our squad.”

Lagiloa said they pulled out of the Ovalau 7s due to commitments of the players.

“We will be very selective on the tournaments we will play at this year,” he added.

“This is to see that we give good time for recovery for players because their welfare is very important to us. So we have forfeited that tournament. We are looking forward to the 2014 Bayley’s Coral Coast 7s, which is the only local tournament that we have yet to win and the focus is in that direction.”

The fitness guru said invitations from local and international tournament has been flooding their e-mails.

“There are openings for us in East Asia tournaments and in neighbouring Pacific Islands,” said Lagiloa.

Meanwhile, for those interested in joining the team for the trial should avail themselves at John Wesley College ground in Suva at 10am.
