After their stellar performance in the Melanesian Cup in Samoa where Fiji finished second behind Vanuatu, the Fiji Surfing Association will now concentrate on setting up programmes to attract more people to the sport.

Fiji Surfing Association president Isei Tokovou said local surfers needed to be exposed to more competitions, especially involving surfers from outside the country.

“When the Cloudbreak Fiji Team went to Samoa, they really gained a lot and they learned to be more competitive,” Tokovou said.

“In Fiji, there are hardly any competitions to help develop our surfers and move them forward so now, we are working conducting more local competitions and will try to bring in surfers from around the Pacific to participate.”

As the next major competition will be the 2015 Melanesian Cup in New Caledonia, Fiji Surfing Association will, in the meantime, set up programmes to help attract more youths to the sport.

Meanwhile, in the Melanesian Cup in Samoa, Fiji’s Aca Ravulo grabbed first place in the Open Male category and Hannah Bennett was first in the Open Women’s category.

Other Fijians who placed in the top four were Malia Johnson (third place in the Women’s Long Board event), John Fitzgerald (1st first place in the Masters (over 35) category) and Stuart Johnson (fourth in the Men’s Long Board event).

Fiji finished second with 9327 points behind Vanuatu, while New Caledonia came third followed by the host country.
