The Vodafone Fiji 7s team are pooled with hosts Australia, Scotland and Portugal in Pool C in the first leg of the IRB World Sevens Series at the Gold Coast, Australia.

Vodafone Fiji Sevens head coach Ben Ryan said every pool would be tough and they had a big hurdle to overcome, especially being pooled with giants Australia.

“Our pool is exciting and challenging at the same time, and meeting Australia will be a stand-out game and very tough,” Ryan said.

“Scotland and Portugal will be hard because both have had more game time, having played in Romania and Bucharest, and I have watched their games, so I know we don’t have any easy games on our hands.”

Ryan looks forward to getting this first leg out of the way.

“Now that we know who we are meeting in our pool games, really at this point we just can’t wait to get it over and done with,” he said.

With his 7s training squad cut down to 24 from 30 players last week, Ryan will cull the team further to his final 12 players.

Players will need to prove themselves at this weekend’s Ovalau 7s at Nasau Park where Ryan will field two teams.

Fiji plays their first game on October 11 against Scotland at 2.02pm, followed by Portugal at 5.23pm and will play the last round of pool matches against Australia at 9.01pm.

Pool A will feature New Zealand, Samoa, France and Japan; Pool B will have South Africa, Kenya, Wales and American Samoa while Pool D sees England, Canada, Argentina and USA.
