The entry of Inter Island Airways (Fiji) Limited, as our new domestic carrier, has been one which has been much anticipated.

However, the constant delays to the official launch has started to give raise to concerns over the commitment of the company to operate in Fiji.

Whilst Inter Island Airways says it is working on the formal application work with the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) for its Air Operating Certificate, CAAF has something totally different to say.

CAAF chief executive, Netava Waqa, said they have not heard from Inter Island Airways lately.

“We have not heard from the company you mentioned for some time now so we do not know what their intentions or plans are,” he said.

But Inter Island Airways, on August 18, updated its website saying it anticipates completion and issuance of the Air Operating Certificate by the end of October.

It said pending the formal Air Operating Certificate issuance, Inter Island Airways (Fiji) plans to launch domestic services in late November.

The Air Operating Certificate is a compulsory aviation requirement which the airline has struggled to complete.

In September the past year, Mr Waqa had confirmed CAAF received the Air Operating Certificate application.

Inter Island Airways was granted 11 licenses by the Air Transport Licensing Board on August 10, 2012. It is understood this license for Inter Island Airways to operate in Fiji expired in November 2013.

Inter Island Airways (Fiji) is the sister airline of American Samoa-based Inter Island Airways.
