Former national 7s captain/coach Waisale Serevi believes the Telecom Fijiana side have a good chance of winning a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This was after they recently won IRB Women Sevens World Series qualifier in Hong Kong after beating France 24-19 in the Cup final.

“After watching their games and the way they played, I believe they have a good chance of winning a medal at the 2016 Olympics,” Serevi said. He applauded their achievement despite limited resources.

“Congratulations to coach Iliesa Tanivula and the girls for a well deserved victory. I watched all their games and they really played well,” Serevi said.

“As Fijians, we are all proud of the achievement despite limited resources and it showed that nothing is impossible.”

The Fijiana beat Argentina 52-7, thumped Kenya 45-0 and thrashed Japan 33-7. Fiji then defeated Portugal 28-7 in the quarterfinal, China 21-19 in the first semifinal.

“My advice to the girls is not to rest on playing well. This is where the hard work starts and they need to train harder,” Serevi said.

“I want to challenge the girls that they can play better than they did in Hong Kong as the IRB 7s Series is another level. It will be tough but not impossible.”

The 2014/15 IRB Women Sevens World Series will start with the Dubai 7s (December 4- 5) Brazil 7s (February 7-8), U.S.A 7s (March 14-15), Canada 7s (April 18-19), England 7s (May 15-16) and Netherlands (May 22-23).
