The Water Authority of Fiji is planning to draw water from the Rewa River because of the dry spell facing the country.

The Authority plans to fetch water from the river as an alternative water source for parts of the Central Division.

Authority chief executive officer Opetaia Ravai said the river would greatly assist water supply because of the drought facing the country.

“We are facing the situation because the water sources that we have are low,” Mr Ravai said.

“We are looking at alternative sources like taking water from the Rewa River. This kind of water assistance cannot be built overnight.”

He said they might start building a pumping station to draw water from the river. The Waila Pumping Station near Nausori draws water from the Waimanu River.

 WATER CRISIS DEEPENS

Mr Ravai called on consumers to use water sparingly.

He said starting today, 20,000 from 4000 homes in selected areas in Suva would receive water through their taps on alternate days.

He said water supply would alter between tap service and water carting by water trucks.

“Suva is served by a number of  water catchment areas that are supplied by rivers. With the drought some rivers are providing less water.”

“Our call centre is open 24/7 if you want to raise issues concerning water trucks or water supply,” Mr Ravai said.
