The executive chairman of Airports Fiji Limited and Fiji Pine Group, Faiz Khan, feels the provisional elections results make it clear that a party such as FijiFirst with Bainimarama as its leader appealed to all Fijians and as a result enjoyed success.

“The one important thing that the other parties can learn from the results is that a campaign based on race alone will not succeed in future,” he said.

“The double edged sword of race based politics has been manifested in the election results.

“If parties who campaigned only on race and controversial social societal aspect, continue with their manifesto post results, they will face the same fate in four years time.

“So hopefully all parties now focus on unity, economic growth, education, security, health and the well being of all Fijians. If that happens, then it augers well for the long term future all Fijians.”

Pine Industry

As far as the pine industry is concerned, Mr Khan said the previous Government led by Voreqe Bainimarama had already fixed most, if not all, the problems and concerns of the past.

“These were related to changes in policies of revenue distribution so that our landowners received more benefits from various revenue streams such as ground rent, stumpage, least security bonus payments, etc,” he said.

“The fundamental principle of the Bainimarama Government of the past that applied to the pine industry, was his policy on fair and equitable returns to our landowners.

“To achieve that we had to get rid of abuse or misuse from the top so that the stakeholders as a whole benefited.

“With Mr Bainimarama set to run government with a clear majority, we are hoping that his principles and policies continue into the future.”

Airports Fiji

Mr Khan reiterated the major redevelopment of the Nadi Airport Terminal.

“This has been made possible through the Nadi Airport Development and Modernisation Decree,” he said.

“With Mr Bainimarama set to run Government with a clear majority, we are expecting a continuation of his policies of a modern, dynamic and prosperous Fiji, that has made re-developments such as the major Nadi Airport terminal upgrades possible.

“The international and local contractors and consultants engaged on this job can also carry on doing their work without any external interferences or unnecessary changes in Government policies.”
