No Coup: Police

The Fiji Police Force has reassured members of the public that there would be no coup in the country.

Police chief of operations Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu made the statement following rumours of upheaval being circulated on social media.

“On the rumours of a coup, I can confirm today that we are ruling it out: there will be no coup,” ACP Tudravu said.

He said they’ve received a brief from their four divisional Police commanders and they’ve found no indication of any upheaval on the ground.

ACP Tudravu also confirmed that they were in close consultation with the military on the monitoring of the situation and they were taking the matter seriously.

“We won’t hesitate to take in people where we find evidence that they are sending out rumours.

“The challenge is that there are people creating social media accounts with bogus identities,” he said.

He said it was everyone’s civil responsibility to be mindful of the situation the country was in.

“It would not assist if we continue to spread rumours or information when we don’t have strong evidence.

“I’m urging parents and guardians in the community not to divulge information that would threaten or provoke people,” ACP Tudravu said.

He said the Police’s focus now was to provide safety and security to members of the public.

“In terms of waiting for the final outcome of the counting and also the first sitting of Parliament,  so that’s where our focus is right  now,” he said.
