Special Yaqona Ceremony For Bainimarama

A special and unique yaqona ceremony was performed to the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama last week when he was chief guest at Dreketi village in Wailevu to open the Dreketi water project.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Manasa Vaniqi who hails from that village.

He said the ceremony was rarely performed and after so many years, it was again presented.

Mr Vaniqi said they had to ask the permission of the district chief Turaga na Tui Wailevu, Ratu Kinijoji Maivalili for the approval.

He said it took weeks for their preparation especially with the dance meke ni yaqona.

The good thing about this, he said was that youths of the village were taught how to perform this unique ceremony.

According to Mr Vaniqi, the yaqona chant was led by Sunia Ramasi Vaniqi.

He said the people, of Wailevu had really benefitted from this project.

The project comes after years of struggle by the community to access quality water supply.

He said they had contributed $10,000 and government’s contribution was $18,000.
