Reijeli Marama, 53, a market vendor has been suffering from the dry spell for three months now.

She said with the daily water cuts it has become unbearable to get through the day.

However this courageous woman will not let the water shortage wear her down.

Ms Marama lives in the highlands and has to go down to the stream every morning to fetch water for drinking, bathing, cooking and watering her crops. The nearby stream is the only constant source of water for the villagers.

The Gusui Savu, Naitasiri resident has not allowed this problem to get the best of her; and every Saturday she still travels to Suva to sell the root crops that she has worked so hard to grow.

With her struggles she is still grateful to the Water Authority of Fiji.

“The WAF has been helpful; they have sent water trucks up so we are able to refill all our containers and bottles to help us,” she said.

Meanwhile, Teresia Liku, a mother faces similar problems as the dry spell takes its toll on her. The forty-three-year-old said, “In Naterumai we have been struggling with the hot season as this causes the dam to dry up.

She said their water dam is usually empty in the mornings and this delays their farm work because the dams do not fill up again until the evening.

Ms Liku seeks helps from nearby villages for water part of which she uses to water her crops.

Despite the difficulties she still travels with her daughter every Saturday to sell her goods at the Suva Market.

These brave women continue to work hard despite of the hardships of water woes they faced.
