USP Dominates FUSA Games

The University of the South Pacific dominated the last day at the 2014 FUSA (Fiji University Sports Association) Games yesterday.
The regional institution ruled the netball courts after coming up through the pool games to dominate the women’s, men’s and mixed grades.
In the women’s final, USP Suva took on Fiji National University and aided by the services of national rep Nina Cirikisuva, maintained the lead throughout 6-4, 11-7, 17-9 and 22-11.
The men’s competition saw a spirited performance by both FNU and USP Two who eventually clinched the grade title having dominated all four quarters. USP was guaranteed the mixed grade after USP One beat USP Two 23-15.
In volleyball, USP One won the women’s, men’s and mixed grade and extended their winning streak to beach volleyball.
In rugby 7s, FNU took home the men’s and women’s titles as well as the U20 grade while USP Suva got their revenge with wins in the rugby 15s men’s and women’s finals.
USP Suva continued their domination in football with the men’s and women’s grades as well as futsal under their belts at the end of the day.
As such, USP took home the 2014 FUSA Games title with 18 gold medals while last year’s winner FNU settled for second place with nine gold medals.
USP sports coordinator Gabirieli Qoro said the win was a clear reflection of their preparation.
“The training has paid off and I congratulate all the USP athletes for a job well done,”Qoro said.
FUSA president Alifereti Cawanibuka congratulated everyone for taking part.
“Congratulations to all the winning teams. To the others, train harder next year so that you can come and displace the winners,”he said.
