The crowd waited in anticipation to catch a glimpse of Lautoka’s new Queen and ambassador, Miss Potent Electric Elizabeth Helen George during the crowning night at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday.

And it was a proud and an emotional moment for mother Helen George, when her daughter was crowned the 2014 Telecom Sugar Festival Queen.

“I’m very proud of my daughter and I thank God for guiding her through the week-long journey,’’ the elated mother said.

Ms George left her Navua home early last Saturday to witness the float procession and the crowning.

“My daughter did not contest just so she could win the crown but she contested to voice her concerns on the neglect of our elderly people,’’ Ms George said.

She said the changing world had deprived elders the love, care and attention which the rightfully deserved.

“Elizabeth has always been a role model in our family respecting every family member regardless of their age.

“We have always looked upon her to lead by example and we assure the people of Lautoka that she will carry on the community work,” the proud mother said.

The 20-year-old Queen is a law student at the University of Fiji in Lautoka.

“My daughter is our first family member to have ever participated in such a festival.

Meanwhile, the new Sugar Queen said she would continue her community work on educating the younger generation to respect our elders.

“A tough journey ahead of me now but educating the younger generation now rather than later is very important,’’ Ms Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth George was also crowned the 2014 Telecom Sugar Festival Miss Charity.
