Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama – Man Of The People
Mereseini Vuniwaqa.

Triumphant FijiFirst leader Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday  extended the olive branch to those in the opposition, “please come and let’s all move together – we must have an inclusive Fiji in which no one is left behind.”

He also declared “I am the Prime Minister of all Fijians, for all Fijians. The days of pandering to special interests groups, elites and  certain areas of the country are over. Now, the days of meeting the needs of ordinary people and their families will continue and with renewed fervour.”

It was part of his address at the FijiFirst Thanksgiving Service at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday. It sums up the kind of PM he would become in the next four years. He will be no different to the PM they knew before the general election.

He has earned the man of the people tag. Yesterday he reinforced that image with the way he acknowledged his loyal party supporters and his commitment to continuing his service-oriented policy.

His landslide victory in the polls is an emphatic statement that the majority of people want a change. They have had enough of the politics of division which  has not got us anywhere. They have, as the PM put it, embraced a united future and chosen the path of fairness and justice.

Reforms that the PM started before the election will continue and he has promised to lift them to another level. His Government will overhaul the civil service to streamline it so that it becomes efficient. The success of his development programme will depend to a large extent on the civil servants who are expected to provide the service that  will see the development  projects completed.

Developments aside, Mr Bainimarama is riding a wave of popularity that is unprecedented. It started when the famous blue bus visited parts of Fiji. Now it has gone to a new level. No other Fijian PM has enjoyed the kind support and loyalty he has had.

It demonstrates that they believe Mr Bainimarama is the leader that can help them realise their dreams. They also believe that the PM’s non-discriminatory policies will promote religious and racial tolerance, the key ingredient in a free and safe Fiji.

The PM’s passion for children and education is well known. The many school buildings that were either newly built or renovated, the free education and free bus fares have touched the lives of ordinary Fijians that when the election came, many people went for 279.

He has earned the ‘Man of the people’ tag.
