The make-up of the Opposition  will be a strong one, says Social Democratic Liberal Party general secretary, Pio Tabaiwalu.

He said it would be better now because there would be an Opposition made of two political parties.

“The party was looking forward to democracy and it is good now that we will have Opposition and the Government will be able to be scrutinised in Parliament.”

This, he said would enable the Bainimarama-led Government to release the Auditor-General’s Report and the level of Government debts.

Mr Tabaiwalu failed to make the cut in the 15-member SODELPA line-up for the Opposition. He polled 1716 votes.

Looking back, he said if they beengiven more time to campaign they would have made  a stronger impact on winning the public’s vote.

“Our strategy worked but we didn’t have enough time and resources so it can be effective,” Mr Tabaiwalu said.

“Our funding was constrained because of the laws in the Electoral Decree and if we had been given more time to campaign we would have made a stronger impact but for three months campaign and 15 seats, that’s not bad.”

Meanwhile, Mr Tabaiwalu said the question of the party accepting the results of the election could only be answered by the party leader Ro Teimumu Kepa.

However, calls made to her when this edition went to press remained unanswered.
