The Social Democratic Liberal Party says it is ready to work with the National Federation Party to form the Opposition.

Party leader Ro Teimumu Kepa said although two parties would be forming the Opposition it was important that they worked together.

“The discussion that we will be having with them will be done in the next few days and we hope to be able to work together with NFP since both parties will be in the Opposition so any party that is in the Opposition need to work together so in this case we will work together,” Ro Teimumu said.

The Government will be made up of 32 members of the FijiFirst while the Opposition will have only 18, 15 from SODELPA and three from NFP.

This, Ro Teimumu said would not stop them from going against the Government’s policies because this would be the first time after eight years that other opposition parties would be able to raise their voices.

“This is the first time in eight years that we’ve had a voice, previously it was just one voice that was being heard, especially by media with the Electoral Decree so now we will be in one room together; we will have the time of our lives in there. We have very, very good people on our side, we have really good parliamentarians who have served in the various areas both corporate and the public sector and we are ready to get into Parliament and raise the issues that need to be raised and just speak on behalf of the people,” she said.

Ro Teimumu added that she does not see herself as the first female Opposition leader. However, she said the role was more of the responsibility that had been bestowed on her and the party after the endorsement of the people’s votes.

“I think for us as a party it is more of the responsibility that we have in terms of the people that have believed in the cause.

“They believed that SODELPA will deliver so that’s a responsibility for us to make sure that we are a credible Opposition, that we bring into play all the resources that we have available to us that we be the best Opposition there is especially after eight years,” Ro Teimumu said.
