The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirms it received information that Imshad Izrar Ali was arrested by New Delhi Police on 18 September 18, 2014 for overstaying his visa.

Mr Ali is wanted in Fiji for the alleged murder of kindergarten teacher, Rajeshni Sharma.

The Indian Express reports that Ali had been hiding in India for the past two years.

Police in India learned the identity of the accused while investigating a kidnapping case registered at Lajpat Nagar Police Station.

According to the Police, on September 9, a Manipur resident reported the kidnapping of his daughter who worked at the Moolchand Hospital.

Police said the girl was traced with the help of electronic surveillance and rescued from Masjid Moth area and was allegedly living with Ali.

In 2009 Ali was arrested for allegedly murdering Sharma, but was granted bail on medical grounds by the court in Fiji.

The alleged murder was reported to the Police by Ali who initially claimed that he found Sharma’s body at her home after she continuously failed to answer her mobile phone.

The post mortem examination revealed that Ms Sharma died as a result of asphyxiation caused by strangulation.

Ali was granted $2000 bail. He committed the alleged offence while on bail for another case of breaching the Civil Aviation Act where he allegedly made false statements and threats about an aircraft.

Her body was found on November 2, 2009.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, confirmed that they had received information of Ali’s arrest.

“We are currently liaising with Indian authorities to have him deported to Fiji to face murder charges,” said Mr Pryde.
