The National Fire Authority (NFA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Jakarta provincial government’s Department of Fire and Disaster Handling for co-operation in firefighting and disaster management fields.

The MoU was signed by NFA chairman, Francis Kean and Jakarta vice-governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on Monday in Indonesia.

Mr Kean was joined at the signing ceremony by NFA chief executive officer, John O’Connor.

As a result of the signing of the MOU, NFA fire officers and firefighters would be expected to undergo specialised training in Jakarta.

Mr Kean, in his address, thanked Mr Purnama and his staff for making the MoU possible and said NFA had a lot to learn from their counterparts in Jakarta.

“We will be interested in understanding their structure and response arrangements.

“There are about 20 million people who live in the city of Jakarta. Taking into account the vehicle numbers, it would be interesting to learn how they ensure effective and efficient response,” Mr Kean said.

He also congratulated and wished both vice -governor Basuki Purnama and governor Joko “Jokowi’ Widodo every success. Mr Widodo assumed the Presidency of Indonesia from October 20.
