Proud Moment For Luveni

Doctor Jiko Luveni’s imminent appointment as the first female Speaker of Parliament is a proud moment for all women in the country.

Dr Luveni intends to be a role model for all women in her new role in the 50-seat august body.

When Parliament convenes on October 6, a motion will be moved for Dr Luveni’s appointment. Given the fact that there is a majority with Government, no hiccups are expected for her appointment.

The former Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Minister said moving around the country and meeting with women was something she would miss the most in her new role.

“When I wear my wig, my appointment will be confirmed,” Dr Luveni joked when asked to confirm her appointment.

On a more serious note, she was aware of the tremendous responsibility she would be shouldering from October 6.

“It is a totally new role for me. I have some experience in chairmanship from chairing international, regional and national organisations, so it will just be a matter of trying to get a grip on Parliament and the standing orders and all that is required in Parliament.

“I have to manage it for the women. In my past portfolio, I spent a lot of time going out and meeting with women in rural areas and that is the bit I will miss the most- sitting out there having a talanoa session with women but I represent all women in my new role as the Speaker,” she said.
