Two women’s centres, to economically empower rural women, will be opened in Kadavu.

The Waisomo Women’s Centre in Ono District and the Ekita Women’s Centre in Yawe District will be opened soon.

The Permanent Secretary for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Josefa Koroivueta will open the two centres.

He said women’s centres had been a capital project of the ministry that aimed to empower women as agents of change in their communities.

“It will open a new window of opportunities for them to utilise their skills and resources to alleviate poverty in their communities,” Dr Koroivueta said. The centres, built with funding allocation of $10,000 from the Ministry of Women, are to enhance the skills development of women and boost their income generating opportunities.

The president of the Ekita Women’s Group, Ana Tinai, said their centre would assist 16 women in her group to expand their bee-keeping project.

“There are 16 women in the Ekita Women’s Group who depend on fishing and small scale farming for their day-to-day living.” Ms Tinai said.

She said the group earned about $300 to $400 per harvest and the next harvest would be next week. They expect to sell 40 kilogrammes of honey and buy two more bee hives.

“We are excited about our new women’s centre because it will provide us with a permanent place to do the production and packaging of honey.  This means a new beginning to improve our livelihood by using our skills and time wisely to earn income,” she said.
