A taxi driver of Sakoca, Suva, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunk driving and dangerous driving yesterday before Magistrate Makereta Mua.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

Bal Krishna Naidu, 32, was driving a taxi along Jerusalem Road, in Nabua on July 24, when he was stopped by the traffic police. The accused smelled of alcohol and had blood shot eyes.

After a breathalyser test traces of alcohol were found in his blood.

He would be sentenced on October 9 while his written mitigation is to be filed within seven days.

Get Legal Aid
Vijend Kumar had been advised by the court to seek legal aid assistance before making a bail application.

Kumar is charged with sexual assault and defilement of a child under 13 years.

Kumar was seeking bail because he has two small children to look after. However, he was refused bail.

He said he could not seek legal aid assistance because he was in remand.

The magistrate ordered that he be escorted by police officers to the legal aid office before taking him back to the remand centre.

Magistrate Mua said his lawyer can file a bail application. Kumar’s case has been adjourned to October 3.

Bound over
Sixty-year-old Kamla Wait had been bound over for a sum of $500 and ordered to maintain peace within 12 months by the Suva Magistrate Court.

A restraining order was also issued. On July 26 Wati swore at her sister in law while the sister in law was speaking on the phone with her husband.

The complainant reported that Wati snatched the phone from her and swore at her.

Wati pleaded guilty to the offence and in mitigation said her sister in law swore at her first. However, she apologised for her behaviour and said they had reconciled.
