Prince Charles Park in Nadi was abuzz yesterday after hosting the 12th McDonald’s- sponsored WESTCOSE Games.

Students from the seven special education schools in the Western Division participated in the two-day event.

The annual event was formalised in 2005 after establishing the Western Council for Special Educators (WESTCOSE).

McDonald’s Fiji development partner, Marc McElrath was pleased with the participation and has promised another great year of sponsorship.

“It’s been a fantastic two days of sporting event and we look forward for a bigger and better event next year,” he said.

“Special school students are excluded from the major sporting events and this is the only way to get them together and participate in sports.

And as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) towards the community, McDonald’s has been sponsoring the event for more than a decade.

“We have been sponsoring this event for 12 years and it is something that McDonald’s has taken ownership of,’’ McElrath said.

“This is a long term commitment for the special children of Fiji.

Meanwhile, in the 5E category Nadi School for Special Education were crowned the overall winners while Rakiraki School for Special Education were crowned the overall winners in the 6D category.

The winners were tallied after winning most the games in their two categories which included touch rugby, soccer, volleyball, cricket, boccia, athletics, penalty kicks and netball.

Shiro Mani Felix, on behalf of the organising committee thanked McDonald’s and co-sponsors for their support.
