Most boat owners in the Vanua Levu will benefit from the two-week Restricted Master/Engineer Class 6 Course in Labasa which ended last Friday.

The course, organised by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), also saw participants awarded with certificates of participation.

The course allows boat owners to be certified boat  masters.

Participant, Joe Tokoni of Taveuni, praised the authority for the course.

“Coming all the way from Taveuni, I learned a lot of new things and the trip was worthwhile,” Mr Tokoni said.

“We have been given until next month to learn and attain certificates from this course” he said.

“After next month, those caught operating without this certificate will be taken to task. We are lucky because from next month those who want to learn the same course will have to go to a tertiary institution where they have to pay more. We only paid $100” Mr Tokoni said.

“We also learned special procedures of how to maintain our boat and the importance of checking our boat thoroughly before any trip” he added.

Meanwhile, the training continues next week at the Labasa Scouts Hall.
