The Fiji Under-13 team have accepted an invitation to compete in the Pasifika Netball Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, during Fiji Day next month.

The president of Lewa Sewa Netters Fiji, formerly the Fiji Primary Schools Netball Association, Susana Liga was excited about the impending trip.

“We were invited to compete in the Pasifika Netball Tournament under the national banner and we’re very proud to be fielding a team which we did our best to compile from the best talents available to us from around the country.

“We have a team of 35 girls from around the country who had been selected from the 2014 Fiji Primary Schools Netball Competition, with four girls selected from Vanua Levu, one girl from Moturiki in Lomaiviti, 15 girls from the West and 15 girls from around Suva. They will be accompanied by 10 teachers who will be part of the contingent as officials.”

Liga explained the selection process saw the girls go through two levels of competition before making the cut for the national side.

“The selection process was the two level competitions we had earlier this year, starting with the district level meets.

“From there, they went on to compete in the national tournament which we had in Labasa in August, when we also decided to change our name from Fiji Primary School Netball Association to Lewa Sewa Netters Fiji.

“Competing in the Pasifika competition will help us go a step further as we continue to build on the development and progress of our primary school netball talent. It will definitely be a big step up and a wonderful experience that will benefit us all immensely.”

Liga acknowledged the contribution of national coach Kate Carpenter, Netball Fiji and corporate sponsors.

“We’re very thankful to Netball Fiji for offering the expertise of Kate Carpenter who has been very helpful. She was down in the west last weekend and had a thorough session with all our girls based there.

“We also would like to thank our sponsors Sportsworld and CK’s Ezibuy for their financial support and for providing our outfits for the tournament.”

The contingent is expected to present their itatau at Government Buildings in Suva on Tuesday before flying out on Saturday morning for the competition in New Zealand.
