Media Stopped From Covering Service

The Fiji Sun was yesterday stopped from covering the Social Democratic Liberal Party’s (SODELPA) thanksgiving service at the Christian Mission Fellowship Church’s (CMF) World Harvest Centre in Kinoya, Nasinu.

A Fiji Sun team was informed by a man wearing a SODELPA vestthat they had been advised to inform the media that they were not allowed to cover the event. When contacted for clarification on the matter, SODELPA’s media liaison officer Sainiana Radrodro confirmed the media was not allowed.

“No media. It’s a church service and we are invited by CMF,” Ms Radrodro said.

The CMF which was also contacted through its national office, said the media was supposed to get prior approval from the church if they wanted to cover the event.

The official SODELPA Twitter account said yesterday at around 5pm “Rev. Tomasi Kanailagi leads the dedication of opposition party members.”

Reverend Kanailagi belongs to a radical group of the Methodist Church. He is a close ally of Reverend Manasa Lasaro.

During the 10am church service earlier yesterday which was aired live on its Trinity Broadcasting Network, Senior Pastor Reverend Suliasi Kurulo, before presenting his sermon, took time to congratulate the Prime Minister and his new cabinet.

“We also congratulate the first woman Speaker of Parliament and also the first woman to lead the Opposition.”

He also encouraged church members to focus on their own livelihoods and let the politicians carry out their tasks.
