Tuitubou a Motivator

Laisenia Tuitubou is one of those quiet achievers in Cabinet. The new Minister for Youth and Sports is a perfect replacement for Viliame Naupoto who failed to make it to Parliament.

The former Commissioner Central is a popular figure in the Central Division. His people skills enable him to easily cope with sensitive issues and gets projects accomplished through public support.

He is also at home in his new portfolio. The youth is part of his passion. He has the ability to motivate the young people as they face the challenges of modern Fiji.

He is set to encourage and support all youth groups in the country as a vehicle for change. Education still ranks as the top issue for our young people. One area that he needs to look into is the low number of iTaukei males pursuing tertiary education. That concern has been with the Ministry of iTaukei  Affairs for quite awhile. Proportionately, more iTaukei females seek higher learning or university qualification than males. This has been linked to iTaukei men chasing dreams of lucrative sports deals overseas or jobs in the disciplined forces, the military, Corrections and Police.

Mr Tuitubou will have to strike a balance here. While he would be promoting sports as well, he needs to encourage the young people to keep education as an important option.

Rugby union and league will continue to offer attractive packages for our talented local players.

One only has to look at New Zealand and Australian  rugby competitions to find Fijians featured. Many professional overseas players are now studying on the side as they ply their trade. They are planning for the day when they have to hang their boots and look for other sources of livelihood.

Other challenges Mr Tuitubou faces include youth involvement in drug and alcohol abuse and sexuallly transmitted diseases.

He is a great motivator and should be able to handle these challenges.
